The Demopolis High School tennis team reached new heights Wednesday as the DHS boys earned the Class 5A, Section 5 championship.

“Our girls played their hearts out too and finished just short,” DHS tennis coach Kyle Williams said of the Demopolis girls, who started play Monday but saw their action rained out until later in the week before finishing in third place.

In the boys draw, Demopolis players won three of the six singles tournaments and two of the three doubles tournaments.

Ismael Quinones won the tournament for No. 1 seeds. Alex Quinones took first place for No. 2 seeds. Walker McNeil took first place among the No. 4 seeds.

Logan Boone finished as the runner-up among the No. 3 seeds while Neilson Renner finished second in the tournament of No. 5 seeds. David Tutt finished in third place among the No. 6 seeds.

The Quinones brothers won the No. 1 seed doubles draw while McNeil and Renner teamed to take first place in the No. 2 doubles draw.

Avery Duckworth and Logan Boone finished as runners-up in the No. 3 seed doubles draw.

“They were excited,” Williams said of his team, which defeated seven other schools to taste a section championship for the first time. “They expected to win because of how well they played all year. But when it actually happened, it was very exciting for them.”

The win will see the DHS boys compete at the state tournament for the second consecutive year when they go to Lagoon Park in Montgomery next Thursday and Friday.

“Since we won, all those guys that finished first won’t have to play a No. 1 from another region. They’ll play a No. 2 from another region,” Williams said. “It’s definitely a step in the right direction. Our goal this year was to win sectionals and compete at state. Now, we just have to compete at state.”
