Sgt. Monica Oliver works Wednesday at the Demopolis Police Department's new substation in the Vowell's shopping center.

The Demopolis Police Department will now have a permanent presence on the city’s busiest highway.

The DPD substation at Vowell’s shopping center is now open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We decided to open the substation because we needed a presence on Highway 80,” Demopolis Police Chief Tommie Reese said.

Vowell’s allowed the police department to use the office space at no charge to the city, Reese said.

The substation is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sgt. Monica Oliver is the commander of the substation, and other officers will be come and go throughout the day.

At the substation, people will be able to get a copy of a police incident or accident report, file a complaint or talk with an officer in person without going to downtown headquarters.

Reese said the Demopolis City Council and Vowell’s played a big part in getting the substation up and running.

The substation’s address is 521 Highway 80 East.
