The Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Organization will holds its fifth consecutive event to honor a legend and spotlight some outstanding male high school seniors on Monday, Jan. 21 in Demopolis and Dixons Mills.
The celebration will begin with breakfast at Christian Chapel Baptist Church at 500 West Decatur Street in Demopolis at 9 a.m. Following breakfast, the group will travel to Rockbabylon Baptist Church of Dixon Mills for the 11:30 a.m. program. The Rev. Fred Moore will be the guest speaker, and youths of various communities will make special presentations.
The annual event was a dream of Annie Robertson, who wanted to financially assist college-bound young men while paying homage to the memory of Dr. King.
In honor of the late Geneva Howard, the group will offer The Geneva Howard Humanitarian Award to an applicant who displays gentlemanly deportment, honesty, academic success and human love. For consideration, the applicant needs to include a letter of recommendation from his principal, counselor or religious leader chronicling his positive attributes and noteworthy roles in his community.
Funds for the awards must be raised from contributions from local churches and communities.
