Unemployment rises slightly in Marengo in December

Marengo County’s unemployment went up by a tenth of a percent from November to December, according to numbers released Friday.
Marengo’s jobless rate now stands at 8.6 percent, up from 8.5 percent in November. December’s numbers reflect 665 county residents out of work.
Statewide, unemployment decreased to 7.1 percent, down from 7.5 percent in November. That is also down from 8 percent in December 2011.
Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby at 4.6 percent, Madison at 5.5 percent and Blount at 5.5 percent.
Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox at 15.1 percent, Bullock at 13.1 percent, and Perry, Greene and Dallas Counties at 12 percent.
