Nichelle Fillmore scored 23 points and Mekena Randle recorded a double-double to lead North Alabama to a 66-58 Gulf South Conference women’s basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at Flowers Hall.

The victory improves UNA to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the GSC. UWA lost for the fourth consecutive time and drops to 8-9 and 3-6.

With two starters missing for half of the losing streak, UWA lost starting point guard Tiarra Pritchett to an elbow injury early in the first half, forcing backup Lanita Futrell to log more minutes than expected while playing with a badly bruised tailbone that had caused her to miss the Tigers’ last game.

“To win in this league you have to have quality reps in practice and for the last two-and-a-half weeks we haven’t been able to have that,” UWA head coach Craig Roden said. “I’m not worried because we know that when we can get the good reps we need we will be OK. We were just starting to hit our offensive stride when this injury thing hit us.”

Although West Alabama outscored the Lions 36-28 in the paint and 34-9 off the bench, the Tigers couldn’t find an answer for Fillmore, who made 9-of-14 field goal attempts. Randle had 11 points and 17 rebounds for UNA.

Nikkia Jordan scored 16 points to lead UWA scoring. Brittany Weathers and Tamya Thompson chipped in 15 and 10, respectively, off the bench. Synthea Reed collected 13 rebounds for the Tigers.

UWA returns home Thursday to host Shorter. Tipoff is 5:30 at Pruitt Hall.
