Several individuals in Demopolis have received phone calls as part of a scam circulating in the area.

The scam involves someone calling people and saying they are an investigator or attorney calling to collect on a loan. The scam artist then claims a loan has been taken out in the person’s name online or some other way and if the balance isn’t paid a warrant would be issued for their arrest.

Demopolis Police Chief Tommie Reese said his department is working to inform the public about the scam.

The scammer asks for personal information like credit card numbers, Social Security number, and date of birth, among other things.

Reese advises people to not give out any personal information over the phone to someone they don’t know.
