Big sixth inning lifts UWA softball over Southern Indiana

DECATUR – Rebecca Schick’s two-run homer to right field highlighted a six-run sixth inning for West Alabama as the Tigers defeated Southern Indiana, 7-4, in college softball action Saturday at the Charger Chillout.
Brooklyn Phillips chipped in a pair of doubles and Michal Robertson tripled and drove in three runs as UWA improved to 4-1 with the second game of a day-night doubleheader against Palm Beach Atlantic still to play on Saturday. USI dropped to 2-2.
With game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Robertson got the UWA scoring started with a triple to right to drive in Kelsey Cooper and Anna Shartzer. Phillips then doubled in Robertson and Whitney Brown doubled in Phillips to set up Schick’s blast.
Sarah Ray (3-0) worked the seventh to earn the UWA pitching win, despite allowing USI three earned runs on three hits. USI starter Brock Harmering (1-1) absorbed the loss, allowing seven hits and six earned runs while striking out nine.
Jana Green and Kaitlyn England had two hits each for the Screaming Eagles. England drove in two runs.
