TUSKEGEE – West Alabama pulled off something that rarely happens on Thursday, winning both matches in a college tennis doubleheader over Tuskegee at the Pepsico Tennis Courts.
Both the UWA men and women’s teams won the first matches of the day by identical 5-0 scores. The men won the second match 8-1 and the women handled last year’s Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions for the second time in one day, 9-0.
The UWA men are now 5-1, with the only loss coming to second-ranked West Florida. The Tiger women are 6-2.
Natalia Cardenas and Dasha Popova won both of their singles matches for the women. Helga Jeske, Jill Furlong, Shannon McEvoy and Emily Gerding each won singles matches in the nightcap after not getting to play after the first match was clinched. The UWA women won all six doubles matches.
The West Alabama men won all six doubles matches over TU as well. Due to UWA clinching the first match at 5-0, Anton Ivanov was the only Tiger to play two singles matches, winning both. Honorio Fernandez, Adam Drysdale, Simon Bardell, Manuel Grossmann and Nestor Vargas all won in singles over the two matches.
West Alabama remains on the road this weekend, playing at Fort Valley on Saturday and at Valdosta State on Sunday.
