UWA tennis sweeps Fort Valley State

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The University of West Alabama tennis teams continued their fast start by dominating Fort Valley State on a damp and cold afternoon Saturday at the FVSC Tennis Courts.

The UWA men defeated the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions, 9-0. The West Alabama women followed suit with a 9-0 victory of its own. The men’s team now 6-1 and the women are 7-2.

Honorio Fernandez, Nestor Vargas, Anton Ivanov, Adam Drysdale and Kike Ruiz won singles matches. Simon Bardell also claimed a UWA win via forfeit. The doubles teams of Fernandez/Grossman and Ivanov/Drysdale won 8-0, 8-3, respectively. Vargas and Ruiz won by forfeit.

Recording women’s singles wins for UWA were Natalia Cardenas, Helga Jeske, Jill Furlong, Shannon McEvoy, Dasha Popova and Emily Gerding. In doubles play the teams of Furlong/Cardenas and Jeske/McEvoy notched 8-3, 9-7 wins, respectively. Popova and Gerding won by forfeit.

West Alabama continues its four-match road swing at Gulf South Conference rival Valdosta State on Sunday.
