Clara Mae Lewis Spence

Clara Mae Lewis Spence, 96, of Demopolis died Sunday, March 17 at Woodhaven Manor Nursing Home.
She was born July 26, 1916, in Sweet Water to the late Leo Dove and Vera Mae Agee Lewis.
She attended Jefferson-Hillman School of Nursing in Birmingham, where she received her RN degree. She worked in nursing for 40 years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for 60 years. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Women, the Annie McCloud Group and the Couples and Singles Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Demopolis Pilot Club for over 50 years.
She was a beloved sister, wife, mother, aunt, cousin and grandmother. MeMe was loved by all, and was a great friend to many. She will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Spence Sr.; son, George C. Spence Jr.; brothers, William Buford Lewis, Clifford A. Lewis, Milton L. Lewis and James Lamar Lewis; and sister, Doris Isler.
She is survived by her daughter, Harriet Spence of Demopolis; daughter-in-law, Anne Spence Fox of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Elma Moore of Montgomery, Merle Carlton of Birmingham and Elsie Clements of Monroe, N.C.; sister-in-law, Louise H. Lewis of Paducah, Ky.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Frankie) Overstreet, Benjie (Tracy) Spence and Jeff (Liz) Spence; great-grandchildren, Spence Overstreet, Tyler Overstreet, Pam Burgeois, Allen Overstreet, Kaylor Baird, Reagan Spence, Elliot Thrasher, Sam Herport, Douglas Cooper and Finn Spence; six great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Demopolis with Dr. Art Luckie officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes Demopolis Chapel directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday night from 5:30-7 p.m., and again at the church from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before the service. Burial will follow at Payne Chapel Cemetery in Dixons Mills.
Pallbearers will be Frankie Overstreet, Allen Bishop, Johnny Brooker, Dan Wilson, Pete Peppenhorst and George Peppenhorst.
Honorary pallbearers are Elizabeth Henderson, Sue Ellen Mourning, RN, Joyce McClusky, Pauline Wheatley, Tomasene Waters, CNA, Roedene Browser, Diane Williams, Lois Rembert, RN, Nettie Mack, LPN, Carrie Watters, LPN, Elizabeth Lindsey, RN, Rose Templin, RN, Diane Abernathy, RN, Sally Jones, RN, Carol Arledge, RN, Wilodean Parris, RN, Vermelle Cranford, RN, Laverne Ratliff, RN, Ann Thomas, RN, Annie McCloud Group, Couples and Singles Sunday School Class and the Pilot Club of Demopolis members.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Demopolis or Alabama Sight.
