North Alabama sweeps UWA softball

FLORENCE – North Alabama pitchers limited West Alabama to just eight hits over two games, sweeping a Gulf South Conference softball doubleheader between a pair of NCAA Division II top 25 teams Monday at the UNA Softball Complex, 5-1 and 11-3.

The losses drop 18th-ranked West Alabama to 18-10 overall and 9-8 in GSC play. No. 24 North Alabama improved to 25-9 and 10-6. UWA looks to get back on track by hosting Miles College in a doubleheader Tuesday at the UWA Softball Complex at 4 p.m.

Breanna Riley (11-3) and Kayla Sneed (5-0) both went the distance for the UNA pitching wins. Riley allowed just three hits in the opener and struck out seven. Sarah Ray (11-3) and Skylar Davis (0-2) absorbed the West Alabama losses. Three Tiger pitchers gave up 11 hits and six walks in the nightcap.

Shelby Goodman collected five hits and drove in two runs in the two games to lead the Lions at the plate. Harlie Barkley and Mallory Patterson each homered for UNA in the second game. Stephanie Shoup doubled in the second game for UWA’s only extra base hit in the two games.
