Toddler dies in car wreck

A 1-year-old died Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash between Demopolis and Greensboro.

James Carlton McGilberry of Demopolis was killed in the crash, which happened at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Alabama 69 five miles south of Greensboro.

The child was a passenger in a 1998 Toyota 4 Runner that left the roadway and struck a tree. State troopers say the child was not properly restrained in a child-restraint system and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Kylie M. Smyly, 27, of Demopolis, and another passenger, a 8-year-old girl, were injured in the crash and taken to Birmingham are hospitals.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.

The baby’s father, Matt McGilberry, has set up the J. Carlton McGilberry Trust Fund at Robertson Banking Company to help the family with funeral expenses. Donations can be made at any Robertson Bank location.
