LIVINGSTON – University of West Alabama first baseman Anna Shartzer has been named the Gulf South Conference player of the week for her performance last week.
While the Tigers struggled, Shartzer was solid at the plate and in the field as she earned her first GSC Player of the Week award. The junior from Gulf Shores, Ala., had a league-high eight hits last week with multi-hit performance in three games.
She had two hits in both ends of a doubleheader against Shorter, and then went 4-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI in a win over Union. The first baseman was also perfect in 16 chances in the field.
Prior to a Tuesday sweep of Miles, Shartzer was fifth in the GSC with a .412 batting average and her 40 hits were fourth. She had scored 24 runs with a team-high nine doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI. She had three more hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Bears and now leads UWA in hitting at .422.
Shartzer is the fourth Tiger softball player honored by the league this season. Left fielder Whitney Brown and catcher Rebecca Shick were named players of the week earlier this year and Sarah Ray was named pitcher of the week two weeks ago.
