Students will report to class Aug. 19 and attend through May 23 under the 2013-14 calendar approved Monday by the Demopolis Board of Education.

Fall holidays will include Labor Day on Sept. 2, Veterans Day on Nov. 11 and Thanksgiving from Nov. 27-29.

The last day of the fall semester will be Dec. 20, and Christmas Holiday will run from Dec. 23-Jan. 2. Teachers and students will return to class Jan. 3.

Spring holidays will include Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20 and Spring Break from March 24-28. The last day for students and Demopolis High School graduation will be May 23. A full calendar is below.

In other business, the board took the following actions.

•Approved $40,000 in funding from the Alabama State Department of Education to buy technology for the middle school.

•Approved Westside Elementary School teachers Addy Card and Jennifer Pruett for National Board Certification assistance.

•Set dates for summer school. The first term will be June 10-27, and the second term will be July 10-July 30.

•Voted to allow the Demopolis Police Department to use the middle school and high school to do active shooter training on June 3-4 and 10-11.

•Gave the green light for the Demopolis High School band to enter a contract to buy new uniforms. The $14,300 bid will include 70 coats and hats. Band Director Matt Fields said the current uniforms are nearing the end of their lifespan.

“They are starting to fall apart,” he said.

Funding for the uniforms will come from band boosters.

•Tabled a request from the Demopolis Police Department for a school resource officer until May’s meeting, when more financial details could be provided.

•Voted to allow the Demopolis Police Department to use the middle school stadium on Aug. 13 for National Night Out.

•Approved a summer work schedule for employees.
