UWA tennis regionally ranked heading into GSC tournament

LIVINGSTON – On the heels of outstanding regular season performances, both the West Alabama men’s and women’s tennis teams head into the the Gulf South Conference Tennis Tournament protecting NCAA Division II South Region rankings as well.

The GSC Tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday in Montgomery at Lagoon Park and the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.

West Alabama opens GSC tourney play Saturday at 11 a.m. against North Alabama at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. After finishing the regular season 21-2 and on a 15-match winning streak, the Tiger men are ranked No. 6 in the South Region, one of two GSC teams in the top six and the highest ranked team not from Florida.

The UWA women are 10th in the region after finishing the regular season with an 18-8 record. The Tiger women, one of three GSC teams in the regional top 10, open the conference tournament Saturday at 8:30 a.m. against Alabama-Huntsville at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

A quarterfinal victory for the UWA men will leave them facing the winner of the Valdosta State-Christian Brothers match Saturday at 5 p.m. in the semi-finals at Lagoon Park. Should the UWA women win in quarterfinal action they will face the winner of West Florida and Christian Brothers in the semis beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Lagoon Park.

The GSC Tournament men’s finals are set for 9 a.m. Sunday and the women’s finals are at noon. Both championship matches will be held at Lagoon Park.
