UWA tennis drops GSC title match

MONTGOMERY – Third-ranked West Florida won its second consecutive Gulf South Conference championship in men’s tennis, defeating West Alabama, 5-1, Sunday at Lagoon Park.
The third seed in the GSC Tournament, UWA lost for the first time since Feb. 24 and saw its consecutive matches won streak snapped at 17. The Tigers are 23-3, with two of those losses coming at the hands of the Argonauts. UWF extended its winning streak to 18 matches, improving to 23-1.
Both UWF and UWA are expected to advance to NCAA Division II South Regional play. The NCAA Division II Tennis Selection Show is Tuesday night. The Argonauts are in line for a host site, while the Tigers came into the conference tournament ranked No. 6 in the region. The highest two seeds in the region serve as host sites.
West Alabama’s lone win in the title match came in No. 3 doubles where Honorio Fernandez and Manuel Grossmann defeated Elio Latela and Felipe Frattini, 8-6. After winning two doubles matches, the Argos won No. 1, 2 and 3 singles in straight sets to put the match away.
