County unemployment drops to 8.9 percent

Marengo County’s unemployment dropped by 1.3 percent from February to March, according to numbers released Friday, April 19.
Marengo’s jobless rate now stands at 8.9 percent, down from 10.2 percent in February. March’s numbers represent 678 county residents out of work.
Statewide, unemployment remained unchanged at 7.2 percent from February to March.
Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby at 4.7 percent, Blount at 5.6 percent and Lee at 5.8 percent.
Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox at 16.4 percent, Lowndes at 13.4 percent and Dallas at 12.8 percent.
