LIVINGSTON – West Alabama softball first baseman, Anna Shartzer was named to the 17th annual Gulf South Conference “Top Ten” Award List on Monday. A native of Gulf Shores, Shartzer was one of only two juniors named to a list dominated by seniors.
The award is based on athletic, academic and extracurricular achievement during the 2012-13 academic year. It recognizes the top five male and top five female student-athletes as the cream of the GSC crop.
This season, the lead off hitting Shartzer led the Tigers, and was seventh in the Gulf South Conference, with a .380 batting average while notching three home runs and 28 runs batted in. Her defense at first base was nearly flawless, committing just five errors in almost 350 chances. She was a First Team All-GSC member and was a NFCA and Daktronics First Team All-Region selection, leading UWA to its third consecutive NCAA Division II South Region Tournament appearance.
Off the field, Shartzer maintained her focus in the classroom. For the third consecutive year, she was placed on the GSC Honor Roll with a 3.48 grade point average as she continues working towards her degree in elementary education. She was also inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, a national collegiate athlete honor society, and named to the school’s President’s List for the third time.
She has been impactful in the UWA community, volunteering her time with several causes, including Relay for Life, the Friends for Jaclyn Foundation, the YMCA, and as a Ronald McDonald House ambassador.
Shartzer is now eligible for the Conference’s most prestigious honor, the Commissioner’s Trophy. The winner of the trophy will be announced at the GSC’s Annual Awards Banquet, Monday, June 17, at the Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Par at 6:30 p.m.
