The Demopolis City Council approved participating in the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday during Thursday’s council meeting.
This year’s tax holiday will be from midnight Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4 and includes clothes and school supplies.
During the meeting, Public Works Superintendent Mike Baker asked residents to be patient as city crews work to pick up limbs and other debris from Monday’s strong thunderstorms.
“Be patient with us. We will get everything within a week,” Baker said.
Baker also gave an update on America In Bloom judging, which is going on this week.
“The judges have been real complimentary on how the town looks,” Baker said.
In other business, the council approved renaming Industrial Park Road to Buddy Griffith Drive North and South.
Industrial Development Board chairwoman Diane Brooker also presented the council with estimates for widening the industrial road and fixing a culvert problem. The estimated price for the work would be approximately $25,000.
The council referred the issue to its financial committee. Brooker said she has also approached the county commission for help funding the improvements.
At the end of the regular meeting, the council went into executive session to discuss good name and character and a “financial situation affecting the city,” according to Mayor Mike Grayson.
