The fall river and city cleanup is being planned for the week of Sept. 2.
Alabama Power, the city of Demopolis and the Demopolis Rotary Club are again parterning for the Renew Our Rivers and Renew Our City.
The city cleanup will focus on sprucing up the four Demopolis City Schools. Volunteers are needed and will be working the morning on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8-11 a.m. on all four campuses.
The Rotary Club also encourages people to take the weekend as an opportunity to do some “fall” cleaning around home or work.
Anyone needing to schedule a pick-up of bulk materials, not household garbage, can contact the Demopolis Public Works Department at 289-3879.
The river cleanup will be Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. both days from the City Landing. Volunteers are also still needed to help there too.
Since 2005, more than 300,000 pounds of garbage have been removed from the water.
More of that “trash” can actually be reused — one year 57 percent of everything collected was able to be recycled.
The most garbage was removed in 2005, when 78,900 pounds where taken out of the river. That number has gone down thanks to the work of Renew Our River.
