West Alabama quarterback Kyle Caldwell has been named the Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for games played during the period ending Sept. 15.
Caldwell earned his first-ever GSC player of the week award after leading UWA to a near-upset at Division I-FCS McNeese State, 44- 42. The junior from Dadeville completed 13-of-20 passes (65.0 percent) for 300 yards and three touchdowns despite splitting time with fellow signal caller Gary Johnston.
Caldwell tossed two touchdown passes in the first quarter, firing a 75-yard score on the first play of the game and then tossing a 26-yarder at the 7:40 mark. Caldwell also threw a 57-yard TD pass on the Tigers’ first play in the second half.
The 2011 GSC offensive freshman of the year, Caldwell has completed 25-of-39 passes for 448 yards and five touchdowns. He has only been intercepted once.
Caldwell and the Tigers remain on the road this week, visiting Florida Tech on Thursday in a game that will be televised live by CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m. CDT.
