UWA to hold Malcolm Butler Day, spring football game on March 19
In conjunction with the annual Red-White Spring Football Game, the University of West Alabama will celebrate “Malcolm Butler Day” on March 19 with an afternoon and evening of activities honoring Butler and commemorating his achievements in Super Bowl XLIX.
An undrafted free agent who was an All-American and All-Gulf South Conference defensive back for West Alabama when the Tigers won conference championships in 2012 and 2013, Butler made the game-saving interception for the New England Patriots with 20 seconds left to preserve a 28-24 Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 1.
Although the spring football game is scheduled for 6 p.m., “Malcolm Butler Day” activities get underway at 3:30 p.m. with a meet and greet autograph session at the UWA Café, which is free and open to the public.
“March 19 is going to be a great day in Livingston,” UWA head football coach Brett Gilliland said. “The Red and White game is always a fun game for our players to showcase all the hard work they have put in throughout the spring.
“It will be extra special this year as it will be our chance to honor our Super Bowl hero,” Gilliland said. “We are thrilled to have Malcolm back in town for this great event and look forward to all UWA students and Tiger fans coming out to show Malcolm how much he has meant to us and to get a peek at the 2015 Tiger Football Family.”
Butler will be at Tiger Stadium around 5:30 to visit with the current UWA football team prior to kickoff. At 6 p.m. he will be honored on the playing field at Tiger Stadium prior to kickoff. He will be presented with mementoes commemorating his Super Bowl heroics, as well as his time as a player at West Alabama.
“Everyone at The University of West Alabama is proud of and happy for Malcolm and his success with the New England Patriots,” UWA Director of Athletics Stan Williamson said. “We are thrilled that Malcolm will be back on campus, allowing the UWA Family to express their happiness and continued well wishes. It will be a fun day to celebrate the success of this exceptional UWA Tiger.”
Free “Butler Did It” T-shirts, as well as free hot dogs, will be given away for as long as they last.
Tiger Stadium gates will open at 5 p.m. There is no admission charge for the spring game.
