A member of the Demopolis Police Department has been arrested and released from the department, according to information provided by DPD officials.
Former DPD Sgt. Derrick Carter was arrested Friday, July 3, and charged with a warrant for domestic violence assault, third degree, involving a female acquaintance in Demopolis. Carter was terminated from his position with the department earlier in the day, according to DPD Chief Tommie Reese. The termination came after an internal investigation into police misconduct, Reese said.
The State Bureau of Investigations, formerly known as the Alabama Bureau of Investigations, was called to investigate the criminal nature of the complaint. Reese said SBI was called to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the matter by an outside agency.
“Our police officers are held to a much higher standard and we must maintain that standard to earn and keep the public’s trust,” Reese said.
Carter, upon being arrested and processed, was released on a $1,000 bond.
No further details were available Friday.
