A student of the Demopolis School System was arrested Friday when police said he was found in possession of a gun at school.
According to the Demopolis Police Department, school resource officers responded to a call of a student in possession of a gun at school. Upon arrival, the officers and school officials were able to take possession of a .38 caliber handgun, according to a DPD press release.
The student, who will not be identified due to his status as a juvenile, was taken into custody and charged with possession of a deadly weapon on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon.
Demopolis Schools Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff said, that while the incident is unfortunate, other students did exactly what they were supposed to do in the situation.
“We had a student who made a poor decision. But, I’m very proud of those students who were shown the weapon and informed their teacher immediately,” Kallhoff said. “The teacher went directly to the principal and once the presence of a weapon was confirmed the student was off campus within 15 to 20 minutes. I’m proud of the way our students, teacher and principal handled the situation.”
According to police, the juvenile has been placed in the custody of the Marengo County Juvenile Probation Office for prosecution.
