Last in series of events to take place in Eutaw
The Paramount High School Class of 1979 will hold its fifth and final Cancer Awareness Community Walk of the year on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 a.m. at the Thomas E. Gilmore Courthouse Square in downtown Eutaw.
The class partnered with Greene County Cancer Society and several other organizations and hospitals to identify needs and host walks all over the county.
“We saw a need to try to engage the community … because of the high rates of cancer in this community,” said James Carter, who is president of the class.
There is a $5 registration fee for adults and $3 fee for children. The proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The class is also establishing a fund to help Greene County cancer patients with travel expenses as they make their way to and from their doctor appointments.
“A lot of people have problems with gas, even if they have family members to take them, to go to and from their appointment,” said Marvin Childs, who coordinated the walks.
With past participants expected to join the class in the final walk of the year, Carter is hoping for a turnout of 75-100 people.
“Our plan is to get the whole county walking,” he said.
Childs said the class plans to continue raising funds through other means after Saturday.
“That way we will always have some funds set aside if someone calls and says they are going to the doctor but don’t have the money.”
The goal of the walks is to “try to get our community woke up because this is a serious issue,” Carter said. Each walk is about one mile in length.
