Sweet Water holds off Clarke County

Sweet Water added a contest with Clarke County to its schedule to kick off the 2019 season and came away with a 13-7 victory.

The Bulldogs came away with the win despite being outrushed by Clarke County, 211-125 yards. But, Sweet Water’s passing game made up some of that ground with 108 yards through the air compared to only 7 yards for Clarke County.

A big key for the Bulldogs was the recovery of three fumbles.

Leading the Bulldogs was Braiden Broussard who went 5-for-7 at quarterback for 82 yards with one touchdown. William Etheridge went 1-for-1 under center for 26 yards.

Leading the rushing attack was Jaland Lewis Horton who ran for 31 yards and one touchdown on 8 carries. Jaylin Dixon added 27 yards and Conner Edmonds finished with 26.

Horton also led the team in receiving with two catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. Lashon Young hauled in a pass for 26 yards and Sasha Smith had two catches for 22 yards.

Sweet Water took the lead in the second quarter when Horton pushed the ball in from 1-yard out. Michael Alan Cole’s point-after was good for the 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs got a big boost heading into halftime when Broussard found Horton for a 27-yard touchdown as time expired. The point-after attempt was blocked, making the score 13-0 at the half.

Points were a premium in the second half. Clarke County got on the board with only 1:36 to go in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run. The point-after made the final score 13-7.
