Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Happy Valentine’s Month! I hope all of you have a wonderful month celebrating your loved ones! January was a busy month for us, as I am sure it has been for all of you. With the new year, we begin seeing many new vehicle registrations. I want to take this opportunity to give you some helpful tips and information regarding titling and registering a new purchase vehicle (including new and used vehicles).

If you purchase a vehicle from a dealership, the dealership should process a title application for you. With this type purchase, you may register your vehicle by coming in to the Probate Tag/License Office or by visiting www.marengocountyal.com and clicking on the “First Time Vehicle Registration” box on the home page. For either option, you will need all of your paperwork from the dealership, the ID/driver’s license of the owner(s) and insurance. Please note, if the dealership did not collect sales tax, you will have to pay it upon registration.

If you purchase a vehicle from an individual, or if your dealership does not process a title application, we will gladly title and register your vehicle in the Probate Office. We need the owner (person who will be on the title), or the person they appoint by *Power of Attorney, to come in to the office and bring the following documents:

Email newsletter signup

Bill of Sale: including vehicle description, sales price, buyer and seller signatures and date of sale (must match title sale date)

Title: including buyer and seller information and signatures and date of sale (must match bill of sale date)

Identification: generally a driver’s license or state ID is used

Proof of Insurance: according to law, must be an Alabama based insurance company

Vehicle Inspection: Only needed if vehicle does not currently have Alabama Title

If you need an inspection, you may bring the vehicle with you and we can perform the inspection, OR a law enforcement officer may complete the *inspection form.

*Power of Attorney and Inspection forms available on our website at: www.marengocountyal.com/probate-forms/

Here are a few extra pieces of information that you may find helpful:

 Vehicles must:
o be registered within 20 days of purchase or a late fee will be charged.
o be registered in the county of residence of the owner.
o be covered with liability insurance through an Alabama based
insurance company.

 All trailers (except boat trailers) must be registered and have a tag.

I hope this information is beneficial to you and helps you to know what options are available to you. If we can provide any additional assistance, please feel free to call us.
