The Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce is producing a new Visitor Guide for the community. The Chamber is holding a contest for elementary through high school students to help design this magazine’s cover.
All types of art designs are welcome for this contest. There will be three divisions for the contest, with first, second, and third place for all divisions. The Chamber will also have cash prizes for all three divisions.
The Visitor Guide is a document that shares many things about the Demopolis community, from history to demographics. It highlights every aspect of the community, like points of interest, educational possibilities, and restaurants. The guides are left at various places throughout the community, such as hotels, where any visitor can pick one up to learn more about Demopolis.
The cover of this year’s Visitor Guide will feature artwork from local students. Chamber Director David Lyons said he believes it is important for children to get involved and learn about what the Chamber does in the community.
“Most kids don’t understand the Chamber or the aspect of that,” said Lyons. “It’s important to me to get the kids involved and be a part of what we are doing.”
Even if a child’s artwork doesn’t end up on the front cover, their picture will appear somewhere in the guide.
“I think it’s important to show our local kids what they can do to people coming into Demopolis,” said Lyons. “We have a great school system, and I want to sell that and show people the artists we have in this community.”
Lyons said submissions can be watercolor art, pencil, or photography that makes people think of Demopolis.
“We want something that shows who Demopolis is,” said Lyons. “How do they see Demopolis? Do they see it from the river or the old homes that are here? What is that child’s interpretation of Demopolis? That’s what I want to show in our front cover.”
Entries will be due March 31, 2021. The entries will become the property of the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce and can be used by the Chamber as it sees fit.
Children are asked to put their names on the back of the piece of paper and send it to David Lyons, Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce P.O. Box 667 Demopolis, Alabama 36732.
