Joseph (Joe) Franklin McGee Jr. went to be with our Lord on Jan 25, 2022. He was born in Eutaw, AL, on March 6, 1924, to Joseph F. McGee and Scottie Chandler McGee.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 62 years, Barbara McGee; his sister, Elizabeth Wedgworth (Waller Evan); and special friend, Betty Jackson.
Joe is survived by his daughters, Carol Bell and Scottie McGee; his brother, Dr. Chandler McGee (Sharon); grandchildren, Melanie Haun, Jennifer (Whitey) Waites and Ryan Haun; great-grandchildren, Autumn Isom, Sunny O’Leary, Scottie Waites, Stella Waites, Sloane Waites, Sinclair Waites, Sarah Waites and Sutton Waites.
Joe graduated from Greene County High School in 1942 when he then enrolled at API (Alabama Polytechnical Institute, now Auburn University), where he played football. After a year, Joseph joined the United States Army Air Corps and earned his wings when he was 20 years old. He flew 97 missions in the Pacific Theater, flying P47 and P51 fighter planes. He was in the air and saw the mushroom from the first atomic bomb. After the war, Joe returned to API where he graduated with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering in 1948.
Joe married Barbara Williams in 1949. He was an excellent cattleman, horseman, father and loved Auburn football.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan 30th at 2:00 pm at Mesopotamia cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude, Greene County ambulance fund or Eutaw United Methodist Church.
