The Ulysses Simpson Jones Monument unveiling will take place on Saturday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. in front of U.S. Jones Elementary School on 715 E. Jackson St.
Ulysses Simpson Jones, along with other community leaders, built the first school for African Americans in Demopolis in 1920. The school was originally called the Negro Public School and later the name was changed to U.S. Jones High School in 1925. Mr. Jones was a visionary who came to Demopolis from Tuscaloosa with the specific goal of building a school for people of color.
Please come out and be a part of this historical occasion. Everyone is invited to attend the unveiling with a reception following this event at Jones Recreation Center, 306 1st Ave. Demopolis AL 36732.
