Two Demopolis sisters, Rebecca Wilson and Stephanie Halkias, will be hosting a meet-up for World Wide Knit in Public Day on Saturday, June 10. The event is open to all yarn crafts and skill levels. The event will meet at the Personal Touch, Inc office on Jefferson Rd.

The purpose of the event is to connect with other crafters and share our art. Knitters, crocheters, and fiber artists of all kinds and skill levels are welcome. Bring your work(s) in progress (wips) and any finished objects you’d like to share and come hang out. There will also be yarn winders and swifts if you need to manage your yarn or prep for your next cast on.

World Wide Knit in Public Day was founded in 2005 by avid knitter Danielle Landes who thought it would be great to have a day dedicated to knitters and yarn crafts. Since 2005, the day has developed into an all-inclusive yarn craft celebration. Statistics from 2016 showed that Landes has 1015 registered events in over 57 countries.

“It genuinely is a worldwide thing and it’s pretty awesome to think that you’re going to sit down on Saturday and knit, and at the same time there’s people all over the world doing the exact same thing,” said Halkias.

Halkias said that she and her sister decided to register the event in Marengo County after her sister participated as a vendor at Christmas on the River in 2022 where she sold her crochet items. Halkias said her sister received a lot of positive feedback that helped start the idea. The sisters also visited a yarn shop in Calera where the owner asked them to join a crafting meet-up.

“That was our first time actually sitting down with other crafters and seeing what everyone was working on. We talked about what we enjoyed doing what projects were working on. It was incredible to spend time with people who enjoy the same things you do,” said Halkias. “So when we realized knit in public day was coming up, we said what better excuse could you have to see if anybody in Demopolis does knit or crochet,” said Halkias.

The event is open to anyone who is interested. Halkias said that even if an attendee has never used a crochet hook or knitting needles, they are welcome to participate. She said several resources will be available for attendees such as books or tutorial websites.

Halkias said she and her sister are looking forward to World Wide Knit in Public Day and hoping for a decent turnout.

“We’re hoping it’s going to be a good day just to connect with some other people in the area who enjoy the same crafts that we do,” said Halkias.
