If you have driven through downtown Demopolis recently and noticed something missing from the park, don’t be concerned, its temporary. The fountain in town square has been removed for some much needed repairs to fix some rusting and rotting.

During the July 20 City Council meeting, Mayor Woody Collins said the fountain will be gone for around 8-10 weeks. Funding for the repairs comes from a recently approved $231,000 budget that also includes paving projects for some city streets.

Approximately $186,000 of the $231,000 will come from the Rebuild Alabama Fund, with the remaining $45,000 will come from a recent opioid lawsuit settlement.

The fountain was first installed in 1895, and its last round of repairs were in 1995. The City Council found that company who did the 1995 restoration were still in business, and called on them to once again bring new life to this iconic piece of downtown Demopolis.
