For many people today, navigating the internet is no problem. It is something that is done every day without much thought.

But for some people, figuring out and keeping up with ever-changing technology is a struggle. Which is why the Demopolis Public Library is bringing back Tech Tuesdays beginning Sept. 19 to help people with basic computer skills.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tech Tuesdays at the library were a weekly event where community members could come in for a few hours to learn a new computer skill. Library Director Kathy Owings said the library staff get questions from patrons about different things on the computers, which prompted them to bring back Tech Tuesdays.

“It could be as basic as turning on a computer, to setting up an email or navigating Microsoft Word. Basically it’s whatever our patrons want help with,” said Owings. “If it is within our ability, we will help them with whatever they need.”

Basic computer skills include keyboarding, using web browsers, working with Microsoft Office, email set-up and etiquette, using the internet for research, and digital safety and security.

Owings said that while Tech Tuesdays are geared towards adults, anyone is welcome to come in for any computer help they need. Patrons are also welcome to bring their own devices with them if they prefer to work from something familiar.

Owings said it is important to know how a computer works as so many things are done online such as paying bills or filling out applications. She also stressed the importance of internet safety.

“It is very important for people to know how to use a computer and how to use it safely. That is one of the things we want to work with people on while they are here,” said Owings. “We don’t want people to get scammed online so we want to help them understand that just because it’s on the internet doesn’t mean it’s true.”

Participants will be able to sign up for individual and small group assistance with learning these skills.

The service is offered by appointment only. To set up a time, call the library at (334) 289-1595. Tech Tuesdays will be held every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
