The Marengo County Board of Education met in an “emergency called meeting” on Sept. 29 where they accepted the resignation of principal Dr. Gary Gibson. Gibson has served as the SWHS principal since July 2022. Gibson also served as the Demopolis Middle School principal from 2021 to 2022. He served in that position for only eight months.

Gibson handed in his resignation during the Sept. 28 regular meeting of the board that was attended by dozens of parents and grandparents who had several complaints about the school. The board reportedly went into a near two-hour closed-door session to meet with representatives of the parents and Dr. Gibson. The board then met with Dr. Gibson alone before meeting with attorneys who were requested to enter the executive session.

There was no decision from the board when the meeting returned to open session, but parents who stayed for the remainder of the meeting were told the Board has heard their concerns and would address the issues. The issues in question were not discussed in detail.
