Demopolis Tigers snag first round victory

The Demopolis Tigers won a close game last Thursday against the Carroll Eagles. The majority of the game was a back-and-forth battle between the Tigers and Eagles, with the Tigers coming out on top 31-28.

Keishawn Rowser got the Tigers on the board first on a 6-yard run with 8:31 still in the first quarter. Jose Tellez’s PAT kick was good, making the score 7-0.

The second score for the Tigers was a 7-yard run by Antonio Cox later in the first quarter with 2:49 to play. The extra point was no good, leaving the Tigers with a 13-0 lead.

The Eagles got on the board in the last seconds of the first quarter when Peyton Plott ran 22-yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick by Zachary Stephens was good, and the Eagles cut into the Tigers’ lead making the score 13-7 with 0:32 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter began with Demopolis quarterback Kevin McElroy scoring on a 1-yard run with only a few seconds gone off the clock. The two-point conversion run by Bryce McElroy was not good, leaving the score at 19-7.

The Eagles responded several minutes later when Carroll quarterback Peyton Plott completed a 14-yard pass to Quadarious Lightner who made a touchdown with 6:13 remaining in the first half. The PAT kick by Zhenya Daniels was good, and the Eagles closed the gap to within five points at 19-14.

The third quarter started with a bang as Dalyn Jackson ran the opening kickoff back 72-yards for a touchdown. Although the extra point was not good the Tigers put some distance between the two teams. With 11:42 left in the third quarter, the Tigers scored again, making the score 25-14. The Eagles went on to score again at the 8:20 mark in the third quarter when Lakeith Person took the ball 5-yards for another score. The two-point conversion, also run by Person was no good, making the score 25-21.

Demopolis scored one last time near the end of the third quarter on a 6-yard run by Rowser with 4:19 remaining in the quarter. The extra point was no good leaving the score at 31-20.

The final score of the game was a 52-yard pass from Plott to Person with 5:54 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion was good, making the score 31-28. The Tigers held off the Eagles for the remainder of the game with the final score of 31-28.

With the win, the Demopolis Tigers (9-2) move on to the second round of the state football playoffs. The Tigers will travel to Mobile on Friday, Nov. 17 to take on the B.C. Rain Red Raiders. The Tigers and Raiders have not met since 2021 when Demopolis defeated the Raiders 49-6.
