If you asked me, my favorite part of the fair and carnivals coming to town wouldn’t be the games or the rides. In my opinion, the best thing about the fair is definitely the food and at the top of the list of foods would be funnel cakes. The sweet, powder-topped treat was always one of the things I looked forward to the most, so I learned how to make them at home to satisfy the craving.
The treat is especially easy to make and only requires a few minutes of your time. All you need is a few ingredients to replicate the carnival treat and immerse yourself in the experience.
Try this quick recipe for a sweet surprise.
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon baking powder
- Powdered sugar
Preparation
First, add milk, egg, water, and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl with a spout and whisk until fully combined. If you don’t have a bowl with a spout, use a regular bowl. Add sugar, baking powder, and salt next, then whisk until combined. Add the flour as you mix and whisk until smooth. Then, set aside the mixture. In a deep pot, pour an inch and a half of oil, then heat it until it reaches 375°F. Check the temperature of the oil with a wooden spoon or drop of water, if it begins to pop, reduce the heat to medium. Drizzle batter into the hot oil and swirl/overlap it as desired.
Cook until light golden brown then flip and cook until golden brown. Take the cooked funnel cake out and let it drain on a few paper towels. Dust with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar or any toppings of your choice.
Finally, you can serve your treats or eat it yourself!
