Doris Lillian “Dottie” Mathers Gaston passed peacefully Tuesday, March 5, at Providence Hospital. Dottie was born July 8, 1947 in Mobile to Jessie Doris Carter Mathers and Chester Eben Mathers.

She is survived by her husband, David Gaston; sons Kevin (Denise) Sims and Randall (Tabatha) Sims; daughters, Angela Gaston (Ron) Pharr and Lori Leigh Gaston (Henry) Haddock; grandchildren, Tristan (Sandy) Sims, Gaston Pharr, Brodie Sims, Channing Pharr, Gannon Pharr, Grayson Haddock, Holden Haddock, Kaydence Sims, Lawson Haddock, and James Klayton Sims; brothers, Norman (Shirley) Mathers and William (Vivian) Sheffield; sisters, Sue Mathers (Dannis) Abston and Gwen Sheffield Grimes; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Dottie was preceded in death by her fathers, Chester Eben Mathers and Horace R. Sheffield; her mother, Jessie Doris Carter Mathers; in-laws, Cecil and Cleo Gaston; sisters, Sophia Mathers Champion, Vergie Sheffield Green, and Edna Sheffield Anderson and brother-in-law, Robert Grimes.

Dottie loved the city of Thomasville and served on the Library Board of Directors for many years. In 1997, she began working at the City of Thomasville and was instrumental in bringing new businesses and industries to Thomasville and the surrounding area until her retirement in 2014. Dottie loved her family and friends…she was your loudest cheerleader, always letting you know how proud she was of you. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation were held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Celebration of Life service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to your favorite charity in memory of Dottie.
