The rumors have spread almost as fast as the flames that took the life of a Uniontown woman and her four children.

Uniontown Police Chief Donald Rhodes said Tuesday that persistent rumors about arrests and arson associated with the fatal May 5 fire that claimed the life of Viola Fikes, 24, and her children Emanuel Lane, WyQuise Fikes, Shakemia Ward and Sekira Fikes, are untrue.

“We’ve been hearing plenty of rumors,” Rhodes admitted Tuesday. “There was a guy that we questioned, but when we picked him up, he was wanted for a probation violation.”

According to Ragan Ingram, a spokesman for the Alabama Fire Marshal’s office, foul play is not currently suspected in the trailer fire that happened in the Cedar Hill Estates section of Uniontown.

“We are still investigating the fire,” Ingram said.

Anytime there is a death caused by fire, the state Fire Marshal investigates the case and makes a determination of the blaze.

Rhodes said his police department is assisting the Fire Marshal’s office in its investigation. However, there have been no arrests in association with the fire.
