UWA Rodeo places second in UTM Rodeo

MARTIN, TN – The University of West Alabama rodeo team concluded the regular season with a trip to the University of Tennessee-Martin Rodeo this past weekend. The UWA men had a strong showing, capturing second place (250 points). The Tiger women were unable to place.

Josh Napp and Dusty Merritt took second and third in each of the two rounds of steer wrestling and finished first and third respectively in the steer wrestling average (Napp 9.7, Merritt 10.9). Tyler Pearson also placed second in the steer wrestling average (9.9). Will Mattox captured fourth in the calf-roping short go (22.5) and finished fourth in the average (33.3) to round out the UWA finishers.

“Our men had a solid final rodeo,” said Head Coach Jayson Schoenfeld. “We have some good things happening with our younger athletes, especially in the steer wrestling event.”

The UWA men are currently third in the Ozark Region, while the Tiger women stand fourth. Junior Jake Littlefield is ranked second regionally in the men’s all-around.

Dusty Merritt and Justin Hasty will represent UWA at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wy., in steer wrestling, while Mattox was also selected as an alternate in calf roping.
