Ethel Mae Barkley Gunter

Ethel Mae Barkley Gunter, 91, of Linden died Jan. 8 at her son’s home in Sweet Water.

She was born Oct. 8 in Octagon. She was a retired dry goods sales clerk and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Elwood Gunter; parents, Clarence “Boss” and Sallie Mae Barkley; brothers, Eddie Lee Barkley and Milton Allen Barkley; and sister, Louise Etheridge.

She is survived by her son, Roger (Faye) Gunter of Sweet Water; brothers, the Rev. Brooks (Margaret) Barkley of Gallion and Phillip (Judy) Barkley of Summit, Miss.; sisters, Clarice Reed of Thomasville, Jean Dunn of Linden and Evelyn Norris of Bay Minette; grandchildren, Patrice (Fred) Clay and Dan (Joy Lee) Gunter; and great-grandchildren, Matthew Gunter, Addison Gunter, Keaton Grace Gunter and Eli Clay.

Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Irby Weaver and the Rev. Brooks Barkley officiating. Burial was at Linden Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers were Dan Gunter, Matthew Gunter, Mack Barkley, Reese Barkley, Kenneth Barkley and Joseph Reed.

Honorary pallbearers were the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church.
