Elsie Cook Holemon, 86, of Demopolis, died Saturday, March 15.

She was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Holt. She was a graduate of Holt High School and the University of Alabama School of Nursing, earning her degree in 1954. She was employed for many years as a registered nurse. She had a varied and rewarding career having worked at UAB-Hillman Hospital, DCH Hospital, VA Hospital, Bryce Hospital and the UA Student Health Center. Additionally, she worked at Gulf States Paper and GM as a plant nurse.

For many years, she worked as a home healthcare nurse with the Tuscaloosa County Heath Department. She was proud of her profession and loved and cared for all her patients’ needs. She retired from the state of Alabama in 1988. She lived in Demopolis for the last six years. She was a loving mother and “Nana.”

She was preceded in death by William Bill Cook and Mary Pearson Cook of Holt.

She is survived by daughters, Angelia (Bob) Lowry of Auburn and Siouxsi (Carl) Fredrick of Northport; son, Gary (Janice) Holemon of Demopolis; and grandchildren, Katie Lowry, Bill Holemon and Wesley Holemon.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with the Rev. Arthur L. Luckie officiating. Visitation will be held from 12-1 p.m. Tuesday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert and Vickie Taylor, friends and staff of Southern Oaks and First United Methodist Church in Demopolis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Demopolis, the American Heart Association or the charity of one’s choice.
