Stegall was honored June 11 as a member of the 2003 class of Paul Harris Fellows by the Demopolis Rotary Club.

Stegall said being chosen a Paul Harris Fellow "was a great honor, and I am most appreciative of it." He wasn’t sure if the honor was due to his service work in Demopolis. "I guess they took into account my whole life. I served my country…my state…my county and my town before I came to Demopolis."

Stegall’s career was in the United States Air Force for 22 years as a pilot and an engineer. After retiring from the Air Force, he ran a country store and cattle farm that his parents had previously owned.

He was elected tax assessor in Sumter County (served one term) and mayor of York (served three terms).

He is married to the former Eleanor Allen, a Demopolis native. At the Paul Harris ceremony, he was emotional about the important role she had to play in rearing his children.

He is proud of the club’s commitment to service in the community.
