With the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Friday that will allow for same-sex marriages throughout the nation, county officials across Alabama, including Marengo County, are looking at how to proceed.
According to officials at the Marengo County Probate Office, local marriage licenses were on hold as of early Tuesday afternoon. While the probate office was taking marriage applications, it was not issuing marriage license to any couple, regardless of whether those applying are an opposite- or same-sex couple.
Probate Judge Laurie Shoultz Hall could not be reached for comment, but it was stated by her office that she would provide a statement once she has more information.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, the Alabama Supreme Court on Monday ordered probate judges to not issue same-sex marriage licenses for 25 days. Meanwhile, the Association of County Commissions of Alabama has instructed judges to follow the U.S. Supreme Court’s order.
