CATV, Fox still ironing out issues

Customers of Demopolis’ cable provider may soon be welcoming Birmingham’s Fox affiliate back to their sets.

CATV President Lynn Goldman said earlier this week that he was forced to remove WBRC from his lineup since Demopolis was, geographically, in the Montgomery Fox affiliate’s footprint.

However, Goldman said the sole purpose for his seeking out the Birmingham programming lies with the fact the Montgomery-based signal from WCOV wasn’t strong enough to reach Demopolis.

Friday, Goldman said engineers from WCOV came to Demopolis to test signal strength and verify that WCOV could not, indeed, service the market.

“It just wasn’t strong enough,” he said of the signal. “We’ve known that for a long time but we were able to prove it (Friday).”

Goldman said he was hopeful Montgomery Fox would agree to sign a waiver allowing him to continue to air the Birmingham-based Fox 6. Goldman obtained a temporary waiver Tuesday which allowed him to restore WBRC to his customers while CATV awaited a crew from Montgomery to come test the signal.

The waiver expired Friday at 5 p.m. but CATV was granted another temporary waiver that would carry through next week while details of a more permanent arrangement can be sorted out.

“We’ve done all we can do,” he said. “We’ve showed them all we could show them. All I can do now is wait.”
