MMI to wrestle in UA tourney

MARION &045; The Marion Military Institute Junior College Tigers are set to compete in the University of Alabama wrestling tournament tomorrow in Tuscaloosa. The tourney will present 10 to 12 wrestling teams. In addition to UA and MMI, Auburn, Georgia, Miami, and the University of South Florida are scheduled to compete.

MMI is a member of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association. They ranked number five in the team standings. The Tigers are coached by two-time Olympic Wrestlers Jim and Dave Hazewinkel.

C.J. Hamilton is the points leader of the team, 17th nationally, with 80.45 points. The 125lb freshman has posted a record of 15-5, including two pins.

The Tigers are returning from the Lone Star Duals, which was held in Dallas, Tex. last weekend. The Lone Star Duals, included 12 schools featuring the number one college wrestling team in NCAA D-I, Oklahoma State.

There were schools that represented NCAA D-I, NCAA D-II, NAIA, and NCWA.

MMI wrestled in four duals in the event. The first was against Oklahoma University, whom they lost 55-0.

The Tigers next opponent was central Oklahoma, who happens to be number one in NCAA D-II. The Tigers fell 49-0 in that match. Bacone College, another school out of Oklahoma, of the NAIA was next for MMI, where the Tigers turned thing around by beating them 36-7.

Their last opponent was finally a team from the NCWA, the University of Texas at Arlington, which MMI defeated 33-8.
