On her way to work at the Hale County Hospital, Greensboro resident Scottie Kelly decided to stop at the local CVS to pick up a few sweet treats for her and her co-workers to enjoy during their Thursday night shift.

But she and her friends, including primary care physician Donna Martin, never thought

to inspect the peanut butter-filled mini Reese’s Cups as they casually satisfied their sweet tooth. Maybe they should’ve.

After Kelly had eaten eight mini chocolates, and Martin had a few of her own, the employees noticed live larvae in the bag.

“We just emptied them out, opened the candy wrappers and started breaking up the Reese’s. Bugs were crawling around inside the candy,” Kelley said. “There were eggs and whole big bugs squirming around inside the candy.”

After both Martin and Kelly searched the bag for an expiration date, which they never foun d, Kelly picked up the phone to dial the 1-800 number on the package.

“I called them and it just seemed like it was nothing to them. The girl I talked to told me they were having a storage problem and that I would get a letter in seven to 10 days,” Kelly said. “I have no idea what it’s going to say. They just said I would get a letter.”

Attempts to reach Hershey’s corporate offices were unsuccessful as of Friday. A recording stated that customer reps were in an all-day training session.

For evidence, Kelley decided to keep the bag of bugs inside a re-sealable sandwich bag although she and her friends had taken pictures, and video, of the creatures in the candy.

But her idea to save the proof quickly changed as the larvae found it’s way out of the bag.

“I wanted to keep it just in case so I brought the bag home,” she said, “but I didn’t want to take it inside my house so I left it outside and this morning (Friday) when I went outside, they were crawling around outside the bag. I had to throw it away then.”

According to Kelley she, nor any of her co-workers, have felt ill since the incident and everyone is “doing good.”

“I don’t even want the money back,” she said. “This is about more than the $2 and some change I used to buy it. This is just not right.”

Although a CVS manager was also unavailable for comment, all Hershey’s miniature products were cleared from the shelves at the Greensboro pharmacy Friday morning.
