The Marengo Academy Longhorn baseball team has shown steady improvement since the season began.

But, in the last week, the Longhorns have simple been on fire. In the last week, Marengo had little time to devote to practice with four games in the last six days. But, the busy schedule did not phase the Longhorns as they won all four.

Marengo ended their brutal stretch Tuesday against last year’s 1-A final four participant Southern Academy with a convincing 10-3 win.

The Marengo offense steadily belted runners across the plate as Thomas Fultz and Ty Glass held the Cougars off on the mound. Fultz threw six and a half innings allowing only three runs on four hits. Fultz also had five strikeouts with only two walks.

Glass came in for the save, allowing no runs, walks or hits while striking out three.

The Marengo bats were equally effective. Chris Whitaker led Marengo at the plate with a 4-4 performance and an RBI. Nic Laduron went 2-4 with two RBI on a double and a homerun. Hagen Kaylor also added a homerun and two RBI. Randy Martin and Robbie Smith were both 2-4. Trey Rowell and Brett Vick also added RBI, Rowell with a double and Vick on a sacrifice.

Marengo was equally dominant in two of the three games leading up to their match up with Southern. They began their run last Thursday when they took on longtime rival Meadowview Christian. The Longhorns easily disposed of the Trojans in five innings with an 11-1 win.

Fultz again carried the load on the mound, throwing all five innings. He allowed only one run, walked two and fanned four.

Dustin Edwards and Randy Martin were both perfect at the plate going 2-2. Edwards had a homerun and two RBI, while Martin added a double and two RBI.

Trey Rowell, Hagen Kaylor and Josh Dunn were all 1-3 at the plate. Rowell had two RBI, while Dunn added a one run homer. Vick also added a hit, going 1-2.

From there, the Longhorns headed to Demopolis to compete in the West Alabama Prep Round Robin Tournament. The Longhorns left the tournament 2-0 as they first took a 10-0 win over the host team.

Sha Hale pitched all five innings allowing only three hits, while striking out 10.

Laduron, Lyles, Kaylor, Dunn and Clayton Crocker were all 1-1 at the plate. Kaylor had two RBI, while Laduron, Lyles, and Dunn had one each. Hale helped his cause at the plat with a 1-1 performance and an RBI.

In their final game of the tournament Saturday, the Longhorns made their greatest stride of the season as they dethroned the defending 2-A state champion Patrician Academy Saints 4-3.

Ty Glass was steady on the mound, throwing all five innings. Glass allowed only three hits, while striking out eight Saint batters.

Lyles and Martin led Marengo at the plate, going 2-3. Lyles added an RBI. Smith, Laduron and Rowell were all 1-3. Smith added an RBI to his totals.

Marengo moves into region play today, as they look to extend their winning streak in a region match up at home with Wilcox.
