The first leg of the Demopolis’ afternoon doubleheader wasn’t the prettiest victory ever, but it still goes into the win column.

DHS head baseball coach James Moody had plenty of things to talk to his Tigers (4-2) about after their 6-4 win over the Greensboro Raiders. But he wasn’t going to argue with the result.

“I think we played very poorly,” Moody said of a game where only two runs were scored off solid hits. “But they found a way to win anyway. And I’ll take an ugly win any day.”

Senior shortstop Tyler Moody got the scoring started early against the Raiders, Hitting a sacrifice fly to drive in junior David Kent. In the second inning, Rob Quinney continued the Tigers’ selfless ways, hitting a sac fly that drove in starting pitcher Bart Butler.

In the fourth, Moody and Quinney struck again. Quinney slapped a triple that drove Butler across the plate for the second time in the game.

Then Moody knocked a single that drove in Quinney.

With just a one-run lead in the sixth inning, the Greensboro defense essentially gave the game away. A Raider error in the fifth let turned a Moody single into a three-bagger, and a second one with Scott Cannon at the plate drove him in.

In the sixth, Butler hit a hard grounder up the middle that the Greensboro shortstop got a glove on, but couldn’t stop. Kent scored on the play, which was ruled an error.

The second game against East Webster (Mississippi) High School was called due to lighting after only two innings. Tyler Moody and Scott Cannon both scored on wild pitches to give Demopolis a two-run lead before a late-day severe thunderstorm warning drove both teams off the diamond.
