The Sweet Water Lady Bulldogs entered last weekends Millry Invitational with a 2-0 record and lots of momentum in their young season.

But tough competition and fielding miscues held Sweet Water in two of their weekend games as they split their four contests.

Sweet Water head coach Adam Sealy said errors proved to be the difference in the two games the Lady Bulldogs could not pull out.

“We beat ourselves in the two games we lost Saturday,” Sealy said. “We had a combined 19 errors in those two games.”

Sweet Water got off to a quick start Friday in their opening game aagainst Choctaw County. The Lady Bulldogs beat Choctaw County to open the season and gave them more of the same Friday. Sweet Water scored two runs in the first and four in the second to build a quick 6-0 lead before Choctaw County could get on the board with two of their own. Sweet Water added one more in the third and five in the fourth to build a 12-2 lead. Choctaw County came back for two more in the fourth before Lady Bulldog pitcher Abby Grochowski put them away. Grochowski has a great day on the mound allowing only one hit in four innings or work while striking out four.

Chelsea Luker led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 scoring three runs. Jessica Anderson and Melanie Curtis were 1-for-3.

The heavy offensive production continued for Sweet Water in their second game with

J.U. Blacksher. The Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in their trip through the batting order, en route to a 7-5 win. They added another run in the second and one more in the fourth to preserve the win in a game shortened by the hour and a half time limit.

Brittany Black took the mound for Sweet Water, holding Blacksher to two runs in the first, another in the third and two more in the fourth to preserve the win. Black went the distance for the Lady Bulldogs allowing five runs – three earned – on five hits. She struck out two while walking only one.

Chelsea Luker and Melanie Curtis carried the hot bats for Sweet Water. Both were 1-3 at the plate, scoring two runs each.

Unfortunately, the Lady Bulldogs’ season-opening win streak hit a roadblock in their third game, as Millry pitcher Kristen Skinner pitched a gem in a 16-1 blowout. Skinner was almost untouchable, holding Sweet Water to only two hits, while striking out 13.

Sweet Water pitcher Abby Grochowski pitched well also, but errors in the field allowed Millry to put the game out of reach early.

The Lady Wildcats built an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. But Sweet Water answered in the second with a run of their own when Curtis rounded the bags to make it a 2-1 game.

From there, the Millry offense poured it on. The Lady Wildcats pounded out two runs in the third, eight more in the fourth and another four in their final at-bat to cruise to the 16-1 victory.

Curtis led Sweet Water at the plate, going 2-for-2.

Sweet Water’s final game of the tournament saw Blacksher get revenge for their Friday loss in a big way. Blacksher rolled up 19 runs on 10 hits taking a big 19-7 win over Sweet Water.

In their first at bat, it looked as if Sweet Water would continue where they left off in game one. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before taking the field in the bottom of the first.

But, the Blacksher bats were hot early, as they would be the rest of the day responding with three runs of their own to take the lead for good. Blacksher added six more in the second to jump to a 9-2 lead before Sweet Water plated three more in the third to make the score 9-5.

Sweet Water added another run in the fourth and fifth innings, however, Blacksher countered these scores with two and five runs respectively.

They added three more in their final at-bat to preserve the 19-7 win.

Black had a tough day on the mound, allowing 16 runs -9 earned- on nine hits in five innings of work.

Grochowski came on in relief to throw the final two innings allowing two runs on one hit.

Black anchored the Sweet Water attack at the plate going 2-for-4. Kourtney Boykins was 1-for-4.

Sweet Water ended the tournament with an overall record of 5-2. Their next game is against Frisco City.
