For most students, Christmas break is a time to actually break. But for three Demopolis High School seniors, vacation was meant for community service.

When Davita Village Dialysis Center assistant administrator Gail Baker and center director Jan Tanner decided to brighten up the lobby, Baker called area schools to see if anyone was willing to take on the challenge.

Once Emily Buroker, Skyler Sawyer and Blakely Tartt answered the call, they dedicated eight days of their break to completing the task.

Baker said there were nights she stayed in the center with the girls until 9 p.m.

“I told them I wanted something fantasy and this is what Skyler came up with,” Baker said as she pointed to the wall. “This isn’t what she showed me when she first came in here either.”

Although the wall is now covered with a mystical scene, with moons, rainbows, fairies, suns and stars, Tartt said they altered the plan as they went along.

“I changed it like three times before we started,” Sawyer said. “Then when we started and it just kept changing.”

Although the initial product was different from the outcome, Baker and Tanner said their patients, doctors and visitors love the new art.

“We really enjoy it. It’s wonderful,” Tanner said.

“I love it,” Baker added.

After the mural was completed, Tanner and Baker gave their patients and employees a special place on the art by adding official Davita star cutouts with their names to the wall.

In addition to being eye candy, the mural will be entered into a nationwide decorating contest for Davita Village offices.

“We’ve had people from our state offices come in and say this is the best they’ve seen in the state,” Tanner said.
